The Special Education undergraduate program leads to eligibility for Collaborative Special Education K-6 Certification or Collaborative Special Education 6-12 Certification. Individuals completing the Elementary Education undergraduate program can add a teaching certificate in Early Childhood Special Education. Students will spend significant periods of time in K-12 grade setting working hands-on with students with disabilities. School experiences will include resource and special class placements as well as inclusion placements. Special education teachers are in high demand and sought out by all local school districts.

 

Special Education K-6

This program is unique in that it prepares students to be general and special educators in elementary school settings. The program combines practical coursework with extensive field-based experiences. Students completing this program receive a B.S. degree and are eligible for Alabama Elementary Education and Collaborative Special Education K-6 certifications at the B level.

Requirements

Students are required to complete 12 semester hours in math, science, social sciences, and English/language arts as part of their general studies requirements. The program is 120 hours long. Satisfactory completion of the program requirements and accompanying tests lead to a recommendation for a Class B Certificate in Collaborative Special Education K-6 and Elementary Education. 

Special Education 6-12

This program is unique in that it prepares students to be special educators in middle and high school settings. The program combines practical coursework with extensive field-based experiences. Students completing this program receive a B.S. degree and are eligible for Alabama Collaborative Special Education 6-12 teacher certifications at the B level.

Requirements

Students are required to complete 12 semester hours in math, science, social sciences, and English/language arts as part of their general studies requirements. In addition, students complete 32 hours in a content area (math, general science, social science, or English) to prepare them for the content to be taught in middle or high school settings. The program is 125 hours long. Satisfactory completion of the program requirements and accompanying tests lead to a recommendation for a Class B Certificate in Collaborative Special Education 6-12. 

Early Childhood Special Education Teacher Certification

Individuals completing the Elementary Education undergraduate program can add a teaching certificate in Early Childhood Special Education in addition to the Elementary Education and Collaborative Special Education K-6 certifications. In order to be recommended for the Early Childhood Special Education certificate, students take 2 additional classes (EDU 432 and EDU 433) and an internship (EDU 497). These additional requirements can be completed in one semester, if desired.
